A Space of Time CDROM Cover
Originally released in 2003, A Space of Time remained fully functional through 2011. While the programs were last updated and recompiled in January 2017, compatibility varies across modern systems:
The PC version is no longer compatible with Windows 10. On Macintosh systems, the Stream of Consciousness mode remains operational, while the Limbo mode has limited functionality - users can navigate the virtual environment, but interactions with clickable objects trigger a single repeating sequence rather than the intended dynamic content.
A Space of Time represents a breakthrough in hypermedia storytelling, moving beyond traditional hypertext to create an immersive, non-linear narrative experience. Unlike conventional non-linear films that simply present events out of chronological order, this hypermedia story creates a unique narrative flow with each viewing. Audiences encounter brief, self-contained scenes that offer glimpses into the characters' lives, sometimes experiencing pivotal moments before meeting the characters themselves.
The experience draws from a vast multimedia library comprising over 700 video sequences, 190 QuickTime VR panoramas, 105 audio files, and 18 Flash animations. These elements combine in two distinct viewing modes: "Limbo" and "Stream of Consciousness."
In "Limbo," viewers explore a photorealistic virtual environment - a century-old building where the story unfolds. As users navigate this immersive space, they uncover fragments of the narrative, their interaction with the environment deepening their connection to the story's physical setting.
"Stream of Consciousness" generates a unique linear experience with each viewing. Using advanced processing technology, the system employs statistical formulas to dynamically rearrange scenes and complementary videos. While the algorithms shuffle and selectively include content based on probabilistic patterns, the story maintains its coherence through fixed opening and closing sequences.
A Space of Time Trailer
The video sequences throughout A Space of Time, including the trailer, were optimized at 320 by 180 pixels. This resolution served two crucial technical purposes: it enabled smooth transitions between scenes and allowed multiple video streams to be loaded simultaneously from a CD-ROM.

A Space of Time transcends traditional storytelling - it is a space that contains a narrative, rather than a linear tale. At its center is David, a homeless man who finds refuge in an abandoned century-old building. After settling in, he begins experiencing temporal lobe epilepsy, accompanied by vivid hallucinations that blur the boundaries between his past, the building's history, and their shared present.
As David explores his shelter, he becomes convinced that the building itself houses fragments of time - preserved moments from all who have passed through its walls. Through a series of interviews, he weaves together these temporal fragments with his own story. Most significantly, he recounts the life of Pandora, a young woman whose visit to the building with friends becomes a focal point of his narrative. The building's other regular inhabitants also feature in his tale: Ira, the janitor, and his nephew Jeremiah, both of whom use the vacant space for their own purposes.
Pandora's story revolves around her fierce criticism of the advertising industry, particularly its overwhelming presence in modern life. She argues that the constant bombardment of advertisements creates artificial needs and promises of happiness, leading to widespread anxiety and diminished psychological wellbeing. Finding no conventional outlet for her frustration, she channels her critique into powerful animated poems shared online. Her digital protests eventually lead to a television appearance - one that David may have witnessed before Pandora ever entered the building.
As the narrative unfolds in its non-linear fashion, David and Pandora's characters develop in parallel, their stories becoming increasingly intertwined. The temporal fragments gradually coalesce, revealing the complex relationships between characters and events through the building's prismatic lens.
